भीमराव रामजी आंबेडकर (14 एप्रिल 1891 - 6 डिसेंबर 1956), डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर या नावाने प्रसिद्ध हे भारतीय न्यायशास्त्रज्ञ, अर्थशास्त्रज्ञ, राजकारणी आणि समाजसुधारक होते. त्यांनी दलित बौद्ध चळवळीला प्रेरणा दिली आणि अस्पृश्य (दलित) विरुद्ध सामाजिक भेदभावाच्या विरोधात मोहीम चालवली आणि महिला आणि कामगारांच्या हक्कांचे समर्थन केले. ते स्वतंत्र भारताचे पहिले कायदा मंत्री, भारतीय राज्यघटनेचे प्रमुख शिल्पकार आणि भारतीय प्रजासत्ताकाचे संस्थापक होते.
1956 मध्ये, दीक्षाभूमीमध्ये, त्यांनी 600,000 समर्थकांसह बौद्ध धर्म स्वीकारून दलितांचे सामूहिक धर्मांतर सुरू केले. त्यांनी भारतात बौद्ध धर्माचे पुनरुज्जीवन केले. आंबेडकरांना नवयन बौद्धांमध्ये बोधिसत्व आणि मैत्रेय मानले जाते.
1990 मध्ये, भारतरत्न हा भारताचा सर्वोच्च नागरी पुरस्कार आंबेडकरांना मरणोत्तर बहाल करण्यात आला. आंबेडकरांच्या वारशात लोकप्रिय संस्कृतीतील असंख्य स्मारके आणि चित्रणांचा समावेश आहे. सामाजिक-राजकीय सुधारक म्हणून आंबेडकरांच्या वारशाचा आधुनिक भारतावर खोलवर परिणाम झाला.
आंबेडकर जयंती (आंबेडकरांचा जन्मदिवस) हा 14 एप्रिल रोजी साजरा केला जाणारा वार्षिक उत्सव आहे, जो केवळ भारतातच नव्हे तर जगभरात साजरा केला जातो. आंबेडकर जयंती संपूर्ण भारतात अधिकृत सार्वजनिक सुट्टी म्हणून साजरी केली जाते. संयुक्त राष्ट्रांनी 2016, 2017 आणि 2018 मध्ये आंबेडकर जयंती साजरी केली. कोलंबिया विद्यापीठाद्वारे त्यांना जगातील नंबर 1 विद्वान म्हणून देखील ओळखले जाते.

"Caste is not a physical object like a wall of bricks or a line of barbed wire which prevents the Hindus from co-mingling and which has, therefore, to be pulled down. Caste is a notion, it is a state of the mind. The destruction of Caste does not, therefore, mean the destruction of a physical barrier. It means a notional change. Caste may be bad. Caste may lead to conduct so gross as to be called man’s inhumanity to man.
All the same, it must be recognized that the Hindus observe Caste not because they are inhuman or wrong headed. They observe Caste because they are deeply religious. People are not wrong in observing Caste. In my view, what is wrong is their religion, which has inculcated this notion of Caste. If this is correct, then obviously the enemy, you must grapple with, is not the people who observe Caste, but the Shastras which teach them this religion of Caste.” — Babasaheb Ambedkar in Annihilation of Caste.
